My Father's Old Computer Manuals

An old PDP-11 manual.

A PDP-11 Fortran manual. Moravian College http://www.moravian.edu had PDP-11's running JHU Version 6 Unix and then BSD 2.8 Unix that could run DEC Fortran and BASIC in RSX emulation. In the unix family tree, Version 6 became Version 7 which then split into BSD and System III. System III later became System V. John's Hopkins University used to hack Version 6.

The label from the Fortran manual.

Moravian College also had an IBM 1130. In order to sell more computers, IBM gathered the best mathematicians of the time and sponsored them to write a library of scientific routines. IBM provided the subroutine library on punch cards. You had to include the card decks for whatever libraries you used. IBM also included documentation of all of the routines. The documentation included the full source code.

Another set of IBM routines.

Programmer's Manual

An IBM FORTRAN coding form for the 1130. The sheet is about 13.4646" wide and 8.5" deep. The outermost rectangular green border is about 12.5" wide and 7" deep. * A standard card form, IBM electro 888157, is available for punching statements from this form

Where I have "TC" in column 6, the form has "CONT." running from bottom to top.
A punch in column 6 marks a continuation line in FORTRAN.
The column numbers at the bottom of the form match the column numbers at top of the form.

Honeywell developed a subroutine library similar to IBM's.

If you still long for IBM Mainframes, the Hercules Emulator http://www.conmicro.cx/hercules/ can run System/370, ESA/390, and z/Architecture under Linux and Windows.
